Squawk summons flashbacks of 60’s psychedelic, the flavor of 70s prog and jam, along with an unrestrained eclecticism that evokes everything from jazz funk fusion to thrash metal and cinematic soundscapes, at once as experimental as Frank Zappa’s soul patch and as comfortably southern as a hair off Duane Allman’s 1971 lamb-chop sideburns.
Formed in 2019 by 3 friends and regulars on the Atlanta music scene, Squawk consists of guitarist/vocalist and Valdosta native Trevor Carter, jack of all trades (and master of many) bassist/vocalist Jason Chapman, and idiosyncratic drummer (and trash kit connoisseur) Casey Crogan.
Carter’s guitar playing—a sort of riff-fueled-freak-mysticism—and his down-home, salt of the earth vocal delivery (at times reminiscent of Incubus’ Brandon Boyd—with a drawl), multiplied by Chapman’s Mike Gordon meets Jaco (in outer space) pocket & groove bass chops, ride atop Crogan’s off-center drumming like a terror bird in mid flight …This is Squawk.
The band’s rapidly expanding fanbase is spreading the word that Squawk is becoming one of Atlanta’s up-and-coming breakout bands. Show goers and listeners compare their original and flavorful musical style to that of bands like Umphrey’s McGee and Dopapod with throwback references like King Crimson, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming shows and your chance to witness the madness and join the Squawk flock.
