Coastal NC
Salt air, marsh magic, and easygoing adventure with a cooler full of DaycationÂ
If you’re chasing that just-right mix of coastal cruising, wildlife wandering, and cold, crushable beer, Wilmington delivers. Here’s how we stacked a perfect Daycation on the coast—gear up, get outside, and let the tide set the pace.Â
Â
Gear Up at Great Outdoor Provision Co.Â
Oleander Dr, WilmingtonÂ
First things first—outfit the Daycation. We popped into Great Outdoor Provision Co. on Oleander Dr and got dialed in by our friends and Destination Daycation partners. Think coastal vibes, friendly staff, and everything you need to get outside.Â
We walked out with:Â
- Astral water shoes (Asheville-made, let’s go)Â
- An inflatable Retrospec SUP (in Daycation IPA colors… meant to be)Â
- A Turtlebox speakerÂ
- Nomadix Blanket Towels (quick-dry, perfect for coastal adventuring)
- A Patagonia Atom Tote Pack Â
Pro tip: Don’t skip this stop. It’s a can’t-miss for Wilmington—equal parts style and function, with folks who know their stuff.Â
Drive-On Beach Time at Carolina BeachÂ
Few things beat rolling straight onto the sand. At Carolina Beach, you can drive on, set up, and settle into your own slice of the coast.Â
We cracked Daycation IPA and Daycation Gold, queued up the Turtlebox (seriously, the sound is unmatched), and filled the afternoon with disc tossing, shoreline wandering, and general fooling around. The new towels came in clutch more than once.Â
This is your reminder: simple is the point. Good company, good tunes, good beer.Â
Kayak Carolina + Shark Tooth Island PivotÂ
We planned a Zeke’s Island Salt Marsh tour with Kayak Carolina—but the wind had other plans. So we pivoted to Shark Tooth Island Reserve near Carolina Beach, and it was definitely the right call.Â
The crew settled into a slower, more sheltered paddle and leaned into birding:Â
- Osprey (including a nest perched on a range marker)
- Great egret rising out of the marsh
- Brown pelican, cormorant, royal terns, laughing gullsÂ
Even under cloud cover, the marsh was moody and beautiful. Quiet water, wide skies, and that low-country hush that only shows up in places like this.Â
And yes—we found a shark’s tooth. Massive? Not exactly. Legendary? Oh yeah.Â
Downtown Stroll on the RiverwalkÂ
We had time to spare before sunset, so we wandered the Riverwalk from Front Street to Water Street. Easy access to the docks, plenty of shops, and some serious nostalgic energy—yes, this is where Dawson’s Creek was filmed.Â
Grab a snack, browse a few spots, and enjoy the breeze off the Cape Fear. It’s an easy, walkable stretch that sets you up perfectly for what’s next.Â
Sunset Riverboat CruiseÂ
Cape Fear Riverboat CruisesÂ
Golden hour called, and we answered onboard with Cape Fear Riverboat Cruises. The crew kept it easy—friendly, relaxed, and dialed into the moment.
We cruised past iconic Wilmington views—the bridge, the battleship—while sipping Daycation IPA and Gold. Easy-drinking and full of flavor, these beers fit the moment—sun sinking, breeze rolling, no rush.
If you’re doing one “book it in advance” activity, make it this.Â
Bonus Morning: Marsh Paddle ResetÂ
Before packing it up, Nikki squeezed in one more coastal send—an early paddle through the marsh on that Retrospec board from Great Outdoor Provision Co.Â
Glassier water, fewer crowds, all the calm. It’s the quiet exhale after a full day out.Â
Then it was back to the Highland Rigs Van—equipped with a shower and legit water storage (bless)—for a rinse, reset, and roll out.Â
