Destination Daycation: Western NC

Hike, paddle and play your way from Bryson City to Asheville

When the mountains call, a full-blown vacation isn’t always required. Sometimes all you need is a well-planned day plus a few adventerous friends. Enter: Destination Daycation: Western North Carolina

From iconic trail miles on the Appalachian Trail to whitewater fun on the Nantahala River and a laid-back finish with cold beer, disc golf and live music in Asheville, this itinerary hits all the highs of WNC in a single unforgettable day.

Start Strong on the Appalachian Trail (Bryson City)

We kicked things off with a scenic stroll along the Appalachian Trail where it crosses through Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) in Bryson City. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel connected to something bigger.

About the Appalachian Trail

Drawing more than 3 million visitors each year, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail—better known as the Appalachian Trail or “A.T.”—is one of the most iconic hiking routes in the world. Stretching more than 2,190 miles from Katahdin, Maine to Springer Mountain, Georgia, it holds the title of the world’s longest hiking-only footpath. Fully connected in 1937, the A.T. is part of the National Park System and continues to inspire hikers from across the globe.

At NOC, the trail meets the river, creating a unique, accessible slice of this legendary path. Whether you’re chasing a thru-hike or just want a quick hike with sweeping views, this section is equal parts approachable and awe-inspiring.

Midday Adventure: Whitewater Rafting on the Nantahala River

With boots swapped for paddles, we headed straight into the day’s main event: rafting at Nantahala Outdoor Center.

The crew was all smiles and stoked to hit the water for an early afternoon trip, and the Nantahala delivered. Cool mountain water, splashy rapids and just enough thrill to keep things interesting without being overwhelming. Perfect for both first-timers and seasoned outdoor folks.

One thing to know before you go: the Nantahala River is dam-release, which means the water stays cold year-round — typically around 45 degrees. We lucked out with plenty of sunshine, which made every splash feel refreshing instead of shocking.

The river builds gradually, giving you time to find your rhythm before the grand finale: The Whirlpool, the final rapid. We went straight into it with full confidence, hit it clean and came out laughing. Best part? Nobody fell out into the freezing water, which feels like a win worth celebrating.

About Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC)

Nantahala Outdoor Center is Western North Carolina’s premier outdoor resort, a 500-acre adventure hub where the Appalachian Trail meets the Nantahala River just minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains. Since 1972, NOC has been a go-to basecamp for families, couples and outdoor lovers of all skill levels.

Here, you can build your own adventure:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River
  • Stand-up paddleboarding on Fontana Lake
  • Zip lining, mountain biking and hiking in Nantahala National Forest

After a paddle, grab a meal at one of the on-site restaurants, complete with space to wind down by the river with a Daycation in hand. Want to make it more than a day? Book a cabin, campsite or retreat rental right at NOC.

Afternoon to Evening: Disc Golf + Beers at Highland Brewing (Asheville)

After drying off and making the drive east, we wrapped the day in Asheville at Highland Brewing Company, aka the perfect mix of chill and play.

Disc Golf at Highland Brewing

Highland, Asheville’s Original Craft Brewery, sits on a 40-acre hilltop seven minutes from Downtown Asheville. The vast “adult playground” features a spacious Taproom, event spaces, outdoor stage, volleyball courts and a full 18-hole disc golf course.

And not just any disc golf course:

  • Ranked one of the top 10 brewery disc golf courses in the world (UDisc)
  • The most played course in Western North Carolina

The layout offers something for everyone:

  • Front 9: approachable, family-friendly and beginner approved
  • Back 9: more technical with steep terrain, natural obstacles and just enough challenge to keep you honest

Before teeing off, we grabbed a couple of Daycation beers from the Meadow bar. (Highly recommend, obviously.) No discs? No problem. Rentals are available onsite.

Post-round, we posted up in the Meadow with burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches from Trucking Delicious food truck. Pro tip: Highland has a pizza spot coming soon, so keep that on your radar for your next visit.

Meadow Music: The Perfect Ending

There’s no better way to close out a Daycation than with live music and fresh mountain air.

Highland is one of Asheville’s premier outdoor music venues and one of the best spots to catch free local and regional acts. With live music four days a week, there’s almost always something happening.

  • In warmer months: shows take place on the outdoor Meadow stage
  • In cooler months: music moves inside to the Taproom

Wednesday Night Highlight

We landed there for Matt Smith’s weekly residency, a local favorite. Matt, a pedal steel guitarist and longtime Highland team member, curates a rotating lineup of artists across genres.

That night, Melissa McKinney joined him in the Meadow, delivering a soulful set that paired perfectly with a cold beer and a mountain sunset.

And honestly? There’s just nothing better than kicking back in the Meadow with a Daycation in hand, good music in the air and a full day of adventure behind you.
