Lunar New Year Beer Collabs with Seattle’s Lucky Envelope Brewing
Every year, Lunar New Year in Asheville means something special at Highland Brewing. What started in 2020 as a passion project between bi-coastal brewers has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural beer releases and community events in Western North Carolina.
Our ongoing collaboration with Lucky Envelope Brewing, an Asian-owned brewery based in Seattle, brings together culture, craft and celebration in one unforgettable series of beers and events.
The Story Behind the Lucky Envelope Collaboration
This partnership began when our Taproom Manager moved to Asheville, NC from Seattle, WA, where he previously worked at Lucky Envelope Brewing. With strong roots in both communities, he helped launch what has now become a six-year tradition of Lunar New Year collaboration beers.
Lucky Envelope Brewing, founded in 2015, is known for creating “culturally inspired beer.” Their brews draw from both traditional and modern styles, often featuring unique ingredients like lychee, Buddha’s hand citrus and tea infusions. Their name references the Chinese tradition of red envelopes, symbols of luck, prosperity and celebration.
Together, we’ve built a collaboration that honors heritage while pushing creative boundaries in craft beer.
Lunar New Year Collaboration Beers by Year
Each year, we release a limited-edition beer inspired by the Chinese zodiac:
- 2020 – Metal Rat Hazy IPA
- 2022 – Water Tiger Cold IPA
- 2023 – Rabbit Yuzu Pilsner
- 2024 – Wooden Dragon Fruit Wheat Ale
- 2025 – Wood Snake Honey Amber Lager
- 2026 – Fire Horse Chocolate Porter with Smoked Sea Salt & Cinnamon
These beers are brewed in our Innovation Brewhouse and designed to reflect both the zodiac animal and culturally significant flavors. From bright citrus to rich spice, every release tells a story.
Asheville’s Lunar New Year Celebration at Highland
The Lucky Envelope collab has grown into a major Lunar New Year celebration right here in Asheville. Each year, we host two standout events that bring together beer lovers, families and community partners.
Free Community Lunar New Year Festival
Our family-friendly celebration is open to the public and draws hundreds of attendees across WNC and beyond. Our family owners hand out red envelopes to the first 88 guests to arrive, a nod to Lunar New Year customs and a symbol of luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
Other event highlights:
- Asian-owned food trucks serving regional specialties
- Dragon Phoenix Lion Dance performances
- Cultural activities and education
- Kid-friendly experiences like chopstick lessons and lantern decorating
This event is all about celebrating and honoring Asian culture. Whether you’re local to Asheville or visiting Western North Carolina, it’s a chance to experience Lunar New Year traditions in an inclusive, welcoming space.
Ticketed Beer + Food Pairing Events
For those looking for a deeper culinary experience, our ticketed events highlight the intersection of craft beer and Asian cuisine.
In recent years, these events have sold out quickly, drawing beer enthusiasts, food lovers and visitors from across NC, SC, GA and TN.
- 2025: Chinese Street Food & Night Market
Over 300 guests joined us in the Event Center and Barrel Room for an immersive evening of bold flavors from Chef J Chong.
- 2026: Dim Sum Brunch Experience
Guests enjoyed a traditional, family-style dim sum service with bite-sized dishes from Chef J Chong paired perfectly with our Lunar New Year releases.
Why This Collaboration Matters
This partnership goes beyond beer. It celebrates Asian culture within the craft brewing industry while creating meaningful experiences for the Asheville community.
By working with Lucky Envelope and partnering with local businesses, chefs and performers, we’re building something that reflects the diversity and creativity of the region.
