Bar Operations Coordinator

Summary

The Bar Operations Coordinator is responsible for oversight of bar operations and beverage offerings in any of Highland’s venues which include the Taproom, Meadow, Event Center, Barrel Room, and Rooftop. Bar systems and beverage service may also be implemented in any of Highland’s campus amenities which include trails and volleyball courts. The Bar Operations Coordinator ensures all bars operate safely and efficiently, draft systems are maintained and serviced properly, Highland beers are offered onsite in sync with market releases and quality standards, and non-Highland beverages are ordered and stocked appropriately. The Bar Operations Coordinator is a liaison between Hospitality and Production which may include brewing, packaging, quality and/or distribution.

While Hospitality Ambassadors are responsible for executing daily service, the Bar Operations Coordinator is expected to understand and implement, when necessary, elements of Highland’s guest experience which may include duties comparable to a host, server, busser, bartender, or retail associate.

*Please note, the Taproom Manager position is vacant. Direction and oversight will be taken from the Hospitality Director until Taproom Manager position is filled.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with Brewing Director and Pilot Room Brewer to develop the “ideal tap list” and small batch release calendar, analyze market demand onsite, facilitate Pilot Room meetings, assist with tasting notes and training details for Hospitality staff prior to releases
  • Collaborate with the Hospitality Director and Taproom Manager to develop and maintain a flight bar featuring curated craft beer flights served efficiently and memorably to enhance the guest experience, showcase Highland’s small batch beers and encourage take home products
  • Collaborate with Taproom Manager to oversee inventory and scheduling of Highland beer offered onside ensuring bars have venue appropriate beer, wine, cider, and NA beverages
  • Oversee inventory and ordering of bar supplies including barware, plastic cups, glassware, flight boards, crowler cans and labels, and other service supplies as needed
  • Oversee inventory and ordering of other beverages including wine, cider, and NA beverages
  • Maintain service and cleaning schedule for all draft systems and canning equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and Highland’s quality standards
  • Accurately record inventory of Highland beer and non-Highland beverages into POS software
  • Collaborate with Events Coordinator on seasonal beer releases and/or onsite events as well as the Campus Amenities Coordinator to facilitate special beverage offerings or new bar systems
  • Collaborate with Facilities Manager to meet and schedule vendors and/or service providers to facilitate new bar installations, draft equipment upgrades, or develop system improvements
  • Collaborate with Private Event Manager and/or Venue Coordinators to arrange seasonal or small batch beer options for private events
  • Train Hospitality staff on draft operations, canning machines and troubleshooting techniques
  • Coordinate and oversee opening and closing of seasonal bars and cooler maintenance
  • Attend weekly Hospitality lead team meeting
  • Show mastery in POS software and retail operating systems
  • Guide guests through Highland’s array of craft beer in accordance with brand standards
  • Anticipate guest needs proactively and conscientiously in a dynamic environment which may include beverage service, selling merchandise and packaged beer, moving seating arrangements, clearing and cleaning tables, serving guests at tables, and directing guests around campus
  • Perform campus tours for guests and vendors as necessary
  • Understand and adhere to North Carolina alcohol laws and permits specific to Highland
  • Maintain knowledge of the Highland brand story, beer styles, campus amenities, family history to educate and communicate our mission and vision to guests
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned

HOURS

This position is 30-40 hours, five days per week. Weekly schedule is standard and dictated by administrative volume and service needs. Business hours are Mon-Fri 8am-5pm. Public open hours vary by season but are daily and most holidays. Ability to work nights and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma required. Bachelor’s or technical degree in Brewery Science, Brewing Systems, Hospitality Management or comparable is preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age in accordance with NCABC laws
  • Two years of experience working with draft systems and/or bar equipment is required
  • Experience working in a brewery, winery or spirits tasting room is preferred
  • Enthusiasm for craft beer and delivering an incredible guest experience is required
  • Experience working in hospitality under North Carolina COVID requirements preferred
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail
  • Data driven and systems oriented with ability to develop SOPs
  • Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative to identify problems and offer solutions
  • Positive attitude with collaborative nature and ability to work with all types of people
  • Open minded and flexible with the ability to adapt quickly with new skills and procedures
  • Excellent time management and verbal/written communication skills a must
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications including Teams
  • Cicerone server level one certification required within one year of employment
  • Cicerone level two certification required within two years of employment
  • Forklift driver certification required within one year of employment

As this position is working in a brewery, the physical demands of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Bending, twisting, reaching overhead, lifting up to 30lbs frequently & up to 50lbs occasionally
  • Working with cleaning chemicals
  • Working in both indoor and outdoor service areas with inclement weather at times
