Associate Packaging Manager

Summary

Responsible for overseeing the Highland Brewing Company kegging, bottling, and canning operations

KEY AREAS

  • Beer: Lead a team to create packaged beer according to quality specifications while minimizing loss
  • Business: Engage in activities to increase efficiency and reduce downtime by creating and reenforcing standardized, streamlined processes
  • People: Mentor and manage the packaging team members and help them develop personally and professionally
  • Place: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized area for packaging equipment and inventory

FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Production Manager
Location: Asheville, NC

Essential Job Functions

  • Works with the Highland production team to execute a packaging schedule that meets market needs according to capacity
  • Oversees the packaging department by ensuring packaging schedules are met, quantities are yielded, quality standards are upheld, and employees have a safe working environment
  • Builds and develops a cohesive team of technicians who can operate, manage, and make sound decisions in all performance aspects of day-to-day operations, coaching them to a standard of efficiency, safety, and quality
  • Manages the team of packaging technicians including staff scheduling, reviewing timecards & vacation requests, and conducting check-ins and annual performance reviews
  • Maintains inventory of all packaging supplies and works with Production Manager to develop orders and forecasts of packaging materials, including but not limited to: cans, bottles, labels, adhesives, corrugated materials, & paperboard materials
  • Maintains SOPs & procedural documents for the packaging department, and conducts frequent reviews of practices for efficiency & efficacy
  • Develops and executes a standardized training program for new and existing packaging employees according to the tier system, including scheduling training shifts, creating standardized criteria, conducting sign-off audits, and maintaining certification checklists
  • Facilitates efficient equipment changeover, line operation, and end of production procedures, to minimize down time and labor costs
  • Reviews production paperwork completed by packaging technicians to verify accuracy
  • Works directly with the Production Maintenance Lead to oversee the preventative maintenance and adjustment of packaging equipment. Actively communicates instances of down time, mechanical failure, etc., according to escalation chart, to ensure quick remediation
  • Works closely with the Packaging Quality Technician to develop and uphold the standards of quality for incoming packaging materials & finished goods.
  • Works closely with the Cellar Manager and Quality Leads to ensure product is cleared for packaging and that the quality is maintained throughout the packaging process
  • Collaborates with the Production Manager to maintain the yearly Packaging Department Budget, including monitoring purchases & expenditures
  • Work with employees to determine development plans and goals to provide opportunities for skill growth and performance enhancement, as well as continuing education
  • Conducts interviews to create a dynamic and successful packaging team
  • Ensures packaging staff follow safety procedures and wear PPE, and works with management to develop safety standards and best practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in degree in engineering, science, business management or related field OR Technical Degree with relevant experience is preferred
  • Two years of experience working with beverage filling equipment, preferably in beer industry
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, & teambuilding skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the brewing industry and process
  • Mechanical experience in a production facility
  • Knowledge of Lean Management systems & GMPs a plus

Experience:

  • Two years of experience working with beverage filling equipment, preferably in beer industry
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and do physically demanding work is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. is required.
  • Willingness to work on and around potentially dangerous equipment/machinery is required.
  • Willingness to work in an environment with high noise levels is required.
  • Willingness to occasionally work evenings and weekends is required.
